Baldur’s Gate 3 Most Likely Will Not Get Character Import Options until it’s out of Early Access.
Baldur’s Gate 3 receives a major update that makes it impossible to use any saved files. All your progress in the Early Access RPG (character building, storyline, relationships) will have to be reset if you wish to continue playing the most recent changes.
While this can be liberating or frustrating to players, it makes sense that Larian would need to make these hard divisions to iterate Baldur’s Gate 3 with each update meaningfully. Fanbyte asked Swen Vincke, Director of Larian Studios, if the studio considered allowing players to import their characters’ appearances between patches. This would be an improvement on having to recreate their favourite characters. It sounds like the team is aware that players may attach to their characters, but such a feature will not be available before the game’s end of Early Access (which the studio expects to be in 2023).
Vincke stated that “it’s on our mind,” Fanbyte. The thing is, when we are developing the 1.0 version, Vincke said that it was on our minds. “Backwards compatibility will only make our jobs more difficult. It’s very difficult to QA a game like this because of the many possible combinations. Even though we do a lot more automated QA, it still requires a lot manual work. It would be more work if we had to consider previous saved games and profiles, and ensure that they interface. “I’m afraid that we won’t have anything like this before 1.0.
