Metaverse App Allows Underage Children to Join Virtual Strip Clubs
The internet is the greatest and worst thing that has ever happened to the world, according to anyone who uses it regularly. The internet makes everything faster, easier, cheaper and more accessible than ever before. In addition, people can do things that they wouldn’t do in real life. Big tech companies like Facebook now openly support the metaverse and call it the next great step in the online world.
People are becoming more skeptical about the metaverse as it becomes mainstream. The NSPCC, a children’s protection charity, has stated that the metaverse presents “a toxic mixture of risks” and is “entirely inappropriate for children.” An BBC investigation looked at VRChat, one of the most popular metaverse apps. It is recommended for users aged 13 and above. VRChat is open to all ages, and even though there is a young barrier to entry, anyone who has tried it will see that there are plenty of mature content.
VRChat called Tuesday. The reporter was confronted with everything, from orgy-ridden strip clubs to sex toys that were as openly sexy as racial insults. There is the option to report and block inappropriate behavior, but the problem is the lack of moderation. The staff is not available to investigate reports. Everybody is anonymous and uses an avatar and a username. There is no one who is actually responsible for policing in-game activity. Although it might violate rules, any child can join VRChat and have fun.
Andy Burrows is the NSPCC’s head of online child safety. He described the metaverse as “a product which is dangerous by design, due to oversight and neglect.” There is no indication that safety was considered when products are being released. I don’t think I’ll be enjoying a virtual cocktail in Paris Hilton’s Roblox penthouse anytime soon.
