Claims Analyst: “Doomed” PlayStation will cease to exist in 10 years
According to one industry veteran, the PlayStation brand is “dead” and will cease to live within the next decade.
Michael Pachter, a well-known video game analyst, appeared on the RDX podcast. He was asked his opinion on whether PlayStation could ever compete with Xbox’s Game Pass subscription. He is pretty clear about this.
Pachter stated, “I believe PlayStation is doomed” and that they will cease to exist in the ten years to come. “They can’t compete. They are not capable of competing. They are not two years behind. It’s an insurmountable lead.”
This bold prediction is possible given the success of the PlayStation 5. It’s a bold prediction considering the current success of Sony’s PlayStation 5.
It is important to remember that Xbox Game Pass allows gamers to access a massive library of video games on any screen with an internet connection. PlayStation will be severely affected if we move beyond traditional hardware within the next decade.
We know that PlayStation has already begun to overhaul the PS Plus subscription service to offer something more similar to Xbox Game Pass. Rumours claim that the new PS Plus will provide access to PS Now and other bonuses such as free trial periods or “classic” games.

He argued that if Sony could switch its 50 million PlayStation Plus subscribers to service more like Game Pass (add-ins like the PlayStation Now library, day one first-party release), Microsoft’s lead in the race towards a Netflix for video games could disappear overnight. The race to become a Netflix for fun is not over.
We will have to wait and see what the “new” PlayStation Plus looks like, but I don’t think PlayStation is doomed in any worst-case scenario.
