This is How a Game Designer Became Max Payne
In case you didn’t see it, Rockstar has announced that they will be remaking Max Payne’s first two games for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Remedy, the team responsible for the original games, will be in charge of the development. They’ll “be in line a typical Remedy AAA game production”, so they should be great. You may have missed that Max Payne’s first game was released in 2001. The sequel followed a few years later, in 2003. Both games proved hugely successful.
Lake explained that the graphics we created for the game in 1996 were all hand-drawn. Even if there were a photograph, an artist would still create the texture. “The character I created in the early stages of development didn’t look like me or were easily recognisable.”
However, things changed later on when the game was updated to use photos instead of textures. This gave Max Payne the familiar face that we all love. He said, “Happy that it was done.”
It is unknown if the remakes will follow the same pattern and have Max Payne play the role of the dev. If he thought the character was recognisable back then, imagine how striking a resemblance it could create now with modern graphics. The remakes have not been released yet, so we will have to keep our eyes open.
