Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Will it Really Work?
I’m almost shocked to think that Steven, Imran, and Natalie have been talking about RPGs for over 100 episodes of our podcast 99 Potions. It’s lotta chitchat, analysis, and chatting about war criminals, the delicious, fleeting crumbs we get at our favorite publishers, as well as the systems that make our brains race. We had lots to cover this week! Two highly-anticipated sequels were announced: Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The flawed but brilliant Dragon’s Dogma discussion was a great addition to my conversation this week on Thanks for the Knowledge. It explains how the sequel will enter a post- Elden Ring universe and how it bodes well for Capcom’s RPG. The bulk of our conversation focused on the huge Final Fantasy VII news about the Crisis Core release and the sequel to one of the best games of 2020, the Final Fantasy VII remake.
Rebirth set our minds ablaze in terms of where the trilogy (yes it is now officially a trilogy) might go once the limiter was removed from the story we already know in Remake. The trailer for Rebirth was a great way to start that fire. It shows Cloud and Sephiroth walking side-by-side towards something. Could it be Nibelheim Could it be Nibelheim?
That’s The Big Question. Oh no. This honor goes to Aerith’s final fate. Rebirth will follow the same path as the 1997 original game? Is it going to follow a different path? We can all agree that Aerith understands more about the new narrative than we do. But what does this mean for the rest of us? To find out, you’ll have to listen to this episode!
This week’s episode covers
- Dragon’s Dogma is flawed but great
- Dragon’s Dogma 2 could be enormous in a post- Monster Hunter World or post Elden Ring World.
- Square-Enix loves their expensive merch
- Crisis Core adds unnecessary complexity to the world of Final Fantasy VII. But not all of it is bad!
- Final Fantasy Rebirth should fix Remake‘s refusal of changing material mid-battle
- Do you remember Cait Sith from Remake? This was hilarious.
- Final Fantasy Rebirth is open to many different possibilities, and that’s what makes it so exciting!
