On September 7, 2012, the most comprehensive version of Batman: Arkham City was released, being dubbed ‘Game Of The Year’ due to its abundance of awards granted by critics.
This version also included all downloadable content (DLC) added post-launch. In 2012, Rocksteady Studios released Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition for Wii U with brand-new exclusive content. Additionally, Batman had a spinoff title called Batman: Arkham City Lockdown which was available on both Android and iOS devices on December 7th of that same year.
In April 2013, Warner Bros. Games Montreal will release Batman: Arkham Origins, the prequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Arkham City was written by veteran comic book author Paul Dini, who also created Arkham Asylum. It consists of a central plotline and side missions that develop subplots. The main plotline follows Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) during his imprisonment in Arkham City, a vast new super-prison five times larger than its original asylum and featuring numerous industrial districts, iconic locations, and iconic Gotham City landmarks. Now you must prevent accidents from arising in this chaotic enclosure for Gotham’s most notorious villains.
The game has received universal critical acclaim, becoming one of the highest-rated video games released in 2011. Metacritic even named it their top pick of 2011 beating out titles such as Portal 2, Zelda Skyward Sword, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Gears of War 3, LA Noire and Killzone 3!
Furthermore, he has officially confirmed a sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight that will hit theaters in October 2014.
Arkham City features an outdoor world, merging stealth action and beat ’em-up gameplay styles. Players are given access to all gadgets produced in Arkham Asylum (except twosome) from the start; many have seen improvements and new features implemented since then.
Additionally, there are brand-new gadgets such as smoke grenades that disorientates enemies. The game features a puzzle and “regime detective”, active use of which highlights enemies’ bones and prompts employees to perform various examinations such as tracking the flight sniper. Players have access to a criminal database that tracks major villains in the city [2].
Rocksteady Studios stated that detective mode will be changed for better perception of the actual game since most players use this mode throughout [3], Riddler riddles are present but require extra effort to locate [4]
Other than the main quest, there are various minor tasks involving key characters. Players can move silently, avoiding meetings with prisoners and other enemies.
A special tool allows you to eliminate enemies without much noise. When Batman engages in battle, it activates an improved battle system from its previous game; it allows deviating from several enemies quickly, responding shocks from items, and using all gadgets during combat. Free movement around the city may be difficult due to various gangs led by Joker, Penguin and Two-Face.[2]
Catwoman is a playable character available at certain points in the game. Her combat system revolves around acrobatics and uses claws, whips and bolas [5], with an analogue of the “regime detective” – “Mode Thief” searching for items that can be stolen [6].
The storyline takes approximately 25 hours of real time, making the game’s total duration 40 hours [15], including 15 hours spent on side missions[7]. Furthermore, there will be around 400 new achievements available throughout this adventure.
Arkham City begins one and a half years after the events of Arkham Asylum [9]. Quincy Sharp, former director of the Psychiatric Hospital of Arkham, achieved great fame through his capture of Joker and used this fame to become mayor of Gotham. Since Arkham and prison “Blackgate Penitentiary” were unable to house all of Gotham’s prisoners, the new mayor of Arkham invested in purchasing a vast area of Gotham slums. He created a prison called “Arkham City”, and around its perimeter stationed an armed squad of mercenaries known as “TIGER”, who were ordered to shoot anyone attempting to flee.
Prisoners entering “Arkham City” live among themselves until they attempt to leave by force. At Sharpe’s request, Hugo Strange was hired as an overseer psychiatrist to supervise prisoners. Many were unhappy with this development – including Bruce Wayne himself who watches over the new prison closely [4] [10] Plans for Arkham City even include a secret room connected to a cabinet at Arkham Sharpe mental hospital [10].
At one point during a protest, Wayne is kidnapped by “TIGER”, who take him straight to Strange who knows that Bruce is Batman and plans on launching something called “Protocol 10”. Bruce leads past angry prisoners as Penguin people who know about Bruce’s identity stun him during one transition. Afterward, Wayne frees himself from handcuffs and escapes by binding with Alfred who sends all necessary equipment. After intercepting a radio broadcast revealing Catwoman had captured two-faced, Batman calculates her position and sends her straight to residence Dent – once an old courthouse!
On arrival, Batman witnesses Two-Face attempting to drown Catwoman in a vat of acid. But Batman has prevailed over his people and manages to save her and kill Harvey at the same time. After learning anything about “Protocol 10”, which Strange referred to, The Dark Knight attempts to locate any information regarding it. Their conversation is interrupted by a sniper’s bullet fired by the Joker that nearly kills Catwoman.
Batman scans the trajectory of the bullet and sends it to the bell tower of the church where it originated – turning himself into The Joker in front of everyone watching on television. But Batman manages to escape just seconds before it explodes, heading straight for The Joker’s lair in a steel mill. There, he aggressively tried to stop Joker and her mercenary Harley Quinn.
Batman still finds the Joker, already lying dead in a wheelchair. Batman is shocked as Joker slowly succumbs from an overdose of “Titan”, infecting Batman with his blood which seems to provide both of them with relief. Unfortunately, however, Clown sent his infectious blood to all hospitals in Gotham – placing everyone’s health at risk.
Batman finds an antidote for Mr. Freeze through Ra’s al Ghul and passes their test, receiving a blood sample as compensation. He brings his frieze, but he does not intend to give Batman any medicine because Freese believes that taking drugs won’t help him locate Nora who was kidnapped by Joker. So it remains a tie in the battle between Batman and Mr. Freeze. After losing, Freese still plans on giving the medicine, but it has been taken by Harley Quinn. Batman sets out to return the medication and for that purpose penetrates the steel plant where he comes face-to-face with The Joker and his henchmen.
Ultimately, Batman prevails, though his victory lies within a scrape from a collapsed ceiling. Joker prepares to finish him off, but Talia stops him and offers Talia a source of immortality. Batman attempts to stop it but becomes unconscious due to the impact of Joker. Joker does not realize Talia activated the beacon to find their Batman; Hugo Strange then learns where Wayne sends his men after him but Catwoman goes ahead. This helps Batman climb and tells him if he wants to stop Strange quickly then they should hurry.
Batman must enter Strange’s base to stop the “10 Minutes.” There, Wayne discovers Ra’s al Ghul was building Arkham City while intending to blow up Arkham City with all its inhabitants – thus killing Strange without distinction from other villains. Before his passing, Hugo activates “11 Minutes,” the bomb upon which his death is based. Batman and Ra’s al Ghul manage to escape with just a second’s notice before it explodes.
Batman manages to catch Ra’s al Ghul in midflight and impales himself with his own sword, trying to escape to meet Batman’s death. A sudden appearance by The Joker appears, warning that if Batman does not appear during an elaborate presentation put on by “Immortal Joker”, she will steal Taliyu’al Gul’s daughter and murder her as well.
Batman arrives at the theater where Joker quickly executes Talia with her sword, giving Batman the antidote. All along, Talia pretended to be Clayface while Batman engaged him in battle and ultimately defeated him with cryogenic grenades that Batman provided Freese with. Batman and Joker are on their way to Clayface, the source of immortality when Batman accidentally breaks open a vial of medicine while trying to save Clayface from death. Joker then laughs bitterly and passes away, leaving Batman with only half the antidote left over – which leaves half for Joker to drink.
Batman Joker makes its way onto a theater stage and stuns its stunned bandits, who simply skip it. Batman emerges from Arkham City to welcome James Gordon of the police force as they arrive with Joker placed atop their car’s body. When Gordon asks Batman about what occurred, Batman goes silent as the game concludes and new titles begin.
In the middle of the opening titles, a voice from a communicator announces Batman missed a call that occurred three hours prior. This is followed by Joker singing “Only You (And You Alone)” group The Platters and ending it with some fierce giggles.
