Xbox recently took an unprecedented step and removed an achievement deemed unobtainable, possibly for the first time ever.

Microsoft’s achievements reward system for Xbox 360 revolutionized how gamers would approach certain games. While we always aspired to finish campaigns and climb online leaderboards as we unlocked extra content through milestones completions, achievements added another level of satisfaction and made these feats feel all that much sweeter for many gamers.

As soon as we hear that achievement pop on Xbox 360, that sense of reward propels us further to unlock more achievements that contribute to our Gamerscore associated with our profile.

Achievements/trophies provide many avenues for players to unlock achievements in gaming, from finishing an adventure, defeating certain enemies or simply starting the game from its main menu screen – for 2007’s The Simpsons Game it even included starting it from there! Some achievements even test veteran gamers such as FromSoftware’s Soulsborne entries; although, others could argue against these achievements/trophies being beneficial to gaming as an experience overall.

Xbox achievements became so wildly popular that Sony followed suit by creating its own reward system with trophies; Steam and Epic Games also adopted similar reward systems on PC storefronts; it even feels strange not hearing an achievement/trophy ping when we complete an in-game milestone – yet Nintendo has so far avoided creating its own version of such rewards systems.

As reported by GamesRadar (via TrueAchievements), Xbox has removed an achievement that will likely irk avid hunters of video game achievements: Homestead Arcana has removed one entitled ‘You Cannot Be Too Prepared”. This removal likely angers gamers across all genres who enjoy hunting these feats of gaming excellence.

Due to an error which made crafting at least one item for every category impossible and made this achievement unobtainable, it has now been taken out.

Achievement was worth 100 gamerscore and counted towards Homestead Arcana’s overall 1,000 gamerscore total, so its removal would surely frustrate hunters. Luckily, 100 gamerscore previously associated with that achievement has now been redistributed among various achievements so that it is still possible to score 1,000 gamerscore – thank the gaming gods!

Achievement removal in Xbox games is extremely rare and should not occur anytime soon. In this particular instance, an in-game glitch should be addressed so players could acquire their ‘You Can’t Be Too Prepared’ achievement and complete its requirements.

At minimum, Microsoft may consider taking measures such as taking away unobtainable achievements and redistribution them elsewhere – though time will only tell whether other unattainable achievements due to glitches in other games will also be addressed by them.
