Starfield being limited to 30 frames per second on console has proved very contentious.
Starfield will release on September 6, and for gamers who have invested hundreds of hours into popular games like Skyrim and Fallout 4, it can’t come soon enough.
Starfield fans who’d been left guessing have an opportunity for more answers about its content by attending yesterday’s massive Starfield Direct, where hundreds of participants showed up with questions regarding mods, DLCs and hairstyles available in game. The massive Starfield Direct provided numerous chances to do just that and got plenty of concrete answers about what Starfield may bring them.
While the show gave people plenty to get excited about, including building giant mech ships, stealing sandwiches and pushing an Adoring Fan into black holes; Todd Howard’s comments regarding performance on console were the primary subject for discussion at home.
Do you support Starfield being limited to 30 frames per second on consoles? In an IGN live-streamed interview, Bethesda Game Studios Director and Executive Producer confirmed that Starfield will remain locked to 30 FPS to maintain consistent levels of performance while at the same time not risking missing some of its detailed and innovative characteristics that define Bethesda games.
Phil Spencer, head of Xbox Game Studios, described its FPS cap as an artistic choice rather than being restricted by console capabilities.
Naturally, this has caused quite an uproar on platforms such as Twitter and Reddit; many prospective players appear disgruntled while others claim they do not believe their enjoyment will be diminished in any way by this move.
“All I really want is the option of lowering [quality in order] to have a smoother frame rate,” wrote user Casiteal in a megathread on Starfield subreddit that has attracted over 800 comments; Ravenorse pointed out how having one of most anticipated new exclusives locked to last generation frame rates “is unacceptable.
Users giulianosse and BrodoFraggens concurred, saying Starfield will do just fine as evidenced by Tears of the Kingdom proving “that great games don’t require cutting-edge graphics or performance; Tears of the Kingdom was proof enough of that fact!” respectively; BrodoFraggens stated this was simply part of modern gaming reality.
