After its difficult introduction, CDPR’s Cyberpunk sci-fi RPG series looks set for success and we could not be more delighted.

CD Projekt Red’s announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2012 and subsequent impressive CGI trailer at E3 2013 created great buzz among its supporters as well as those familiar with The Witcher franchise.

At E3 2018, fans were treated to an eye-catching cinematic trailer showing Cyberpunk 2077’s promise as CDPR’s next major PC and console hit, yet when released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2020 it fell far short of expectations, especially among last gen console owners.

Cyberpunk 2077 launched into such disarray that Sony decided to pull it from their PSN Store entirely. Bugs, performance issues and lack of content all plagued Cyberpunk 2077 at launch; Sony even removed it altogether from PSN!

Cyberpunk 2077 would later return to the PSN Store in 2021; however, even with several patches applied it remained far from ideal on PS4 and Xbox One. Finally, in February 2022 the next-gen updates for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S arrived, making for much closer gameplay compared to E3 presentations.

Even though Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t perfect, its overall experience could still provide players with both stability and enjoyment; at least on PC and new-gen console platforms.

Now that Cyberpunk 2077 appears to be meeting its promise, its inaugural expansion, Phantom Liberty was unveiled in September 2022. Phantom Liberty invites players “once more take on the role of V – an independent cyberpunk for hire – in their mission to save President of New United States of America after her orbital shuttle is shot down over Night City’s deadliest district – Dogtown.”

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will hit PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on 26 September 2023; but after its arrival what awaits this series? We know a sequel is in development which is set to commence development sometime around 2024 – though beyond knowing its codename “Project Orion”, not much else is known about its contents.

However, we have learned something exciting this week! According to PSU.com’s report from Bloomberg interviews with CD Projekt Red’s Gabe Amatangelo revealed their plans on using Unreal Engine 5 when creating Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

Cyberpunk 2077 had previously been built using CDPR’s proprietary software REDengine 4, however following in the footsteps of The Witcher remake it will now use Unreal Engine 5. Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
