As technology develops, gamers anticipate new-gen console games to look and perform better than ever. More powerful hardware allows for higher resolution graphics and smoother frame rates; therefore it only makes sense that big-name titles should strive for this excellence?

Due to this reason, when an announcement that an anticipated game doesn’t reach 60 frames per second on consoles is made public. We saw it with Gotham Knights last year; more recently Bethesda confirmed Starfield would also remain locked at 30FPS console versions; some tech analysts speculate this may signal future instability within gaming industry.

As TheGamer reports, two game tech analysts from Digital Foundry recently discussed Starfield’s frame rate in a breakdown video and noted its low frame rate made sense considering it is designed for object permanence – meaning players’ actions need to constantly remember how their effects manifest themselves across its many worlds – while maintaining consistent performance across an expansive geographical location. They believe this may become standard practice among future titles too.

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman stated, “For better or for worse, and mainly the latter I suppose, 30FPS will once more become the dominant frame rate seen in big console games, and performance modes may not provide as stable of performance as we’d prefer,” as Digital Foundry anticipated this would happen with their expansion towards advanced graphics capabilities. While that might be disappointing at times, Linneman noted this was to be expected based on cross-gen period in which developers could push frame rates because their focus still needed to remain lower end platforms; now things go far beyond these platforms.”

Though this news would surely come as a shock, most can agree it would be preferable for games to run smoothly at lower frame rates rather than constantly dropping frames when trying for higher ones.
