Star Wars Outlaws will no longer utilize procedurally generated planets for massive planets.
Outlaws is Ubisoft’s open-world Star Wars title and I find myself becoming increasingly eager for its launch.
Outlaws was revealed at June’s Xbox Games Showcase and features Kay Vess and Nix, her fuzzy, adorable axolotl-like companion in an all-new adventure set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Boasting GTA-esque wanted system and an oddly seductive droid companion droids; Outlaws promises to be massive as developers tease of its scale with each announcement about planet sizes!
Mathias Karlson stated previously that Toshara will be larger than The Division 2’s map, while Julian Gerighty suggested two or three zones from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey could make up one planet each in Outlaws trailers; there were seven separate regions within Odyssey alone! Star Wars fans believe four or five planets may even surpass Odyssey when considering Outlaws is set after all these other movies!
Eurogamer reports that Gerighty confirmed in an interview with Edge magazine that all planets will be “handcrafted”, not procedurally generated like other games have done in the past. He stated, “We haven’t procedurally generated an entire planet.”
Of course, Bethesda’s space-exploration RPG Starfield will feature procedurally generated planets as well, although their scale likely differ significantly; hence making comparisons unreliable.
Star Wars Outlaws is currently set for a 2024 release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms and I expect that when released we’ll experience another surge of demand for robots wearing trenchcoats – Lord help us all.
