Twitter Blue subscribers who opt to display the tick they paid for are being shamed into hiding it from others.C
Who’s ready for another roundup of Twitter banter? Technically speaking, that should read as Twitter rather than “X,” but is anyone really going to stop calling it that?
Twitter has undergone dramatic change ever since Tesla founder Elon Musk assumed control. Musk acquired it for an eye-watering $41 billion deal last year despite initially trying to back out. Because he could no longer back out, perhaps that explains his determination to destroy Twitter altogether? We have witnessed questionable changes like scrapping verification system for Twitter Blue; banning 600 tweets daily cap; increased direct message sending limit and big X rebrand.
Twitter has amassed an estimated $41 billion market value due to its immensely recognisable brand recognition, such as being part of our everyday lexicon with words such as tweet and “blaze your glory”. So I find it very surprising and odd that its Blue subscribers now have an option of hiding their tick verification, even though many might purchase an subscription in part to achieve verification purposes.
Twitter Blue can be confusing. No longer can you know if a celebrity you like really exists, as random users on the Internet can now verify they exist without any clear reason whatsoever. Yes, I can see Twitter Blue having some applications: editing longer posts might prove helpful career-wise but many now view Blue ticks as red flags due to scam and spam accounts with them; meanwhile if you wish to remain undetected as subscribers then now’s your opportunity.
Twitter Blue’s Features page reads as follows: “If you are an existing subscriber, you have the ability to choose to hide your checkmark on your account – both profile and post level – as an optional step towards better privacy for yourself and other subscribers. While your checkmark might still appear occasionally and some features could reveal you have an active subscription; certain features may become unavailable while it remains hidden and we are committed to developing and improving this feature for our community.” I fear what’s next for Twitter Blue;
