Xbox gave PlayStation 5 access to an exclusive RPG.
Baldur’s Gate III, released just this past month on PC, has already established itself as an early contender for Game of the Year 2023.
Baldur’s Gate III takes place over 120 years after the events of Dungeons & Dragons II and involves players uniting against darkness once more to defeat it. Baldur’s Gate III is certainly an ambitious RPG from Larian Studios; reports estimate an approximate 200 hour playback and over 17,000 possible endings are estimated as playthrough times for completion.
At this year’s end, it will be interesting to compare both Baldur’s Gate III and Starfield in terms of commercial and critical reception.
With Microsoft now owning Bethesda parent ZeniMax Media, Starfield will be an Xbox console exclusive before arriving on PC. Microsoft will rely heavily on Starfield as one of its key first-party exclusive titles as Xbox Series X|S has struggled to provide consistent first-party exclusive titles – Starfield itself has already persuaded some gamers to purchase an Xbox just so that they could experience sci-fi RPG title Starfield!
PlayStation has managed to deliver quality exclusives of late, although none can compare with Starfield in terms of RPG genre titles on its platform – or so some would claim.
At some point, Baldur’s Gate III will make its way onto Xbox Series X|S. Unfortunately, due to technical constraints of Series S consoles and Larian Studios’ decision not to find an immediate resolution for that version of Baldur’s Gate III being on Xbox, Larian Studios may have inadvertently claimed Sony an exclusive time-exclusive that may go head to head with Starfield on release dates for both titles.
Baldur’s Gate III has launched on PC and will hit PlayStation 5 on 6 September 2023; an Xbox Series X|S release date has yet to be set.
