Former GTA 6 developer officially confirms rebooted GTA 6 development process
Grand Theft Auto series has quickly become one of, if not the, premier properties in video game history and fans are anxiously waiting to receive news of its next installment.
Rockstar Games announced its plans to develop GTA VI back in February 2022; since then we’ve heard no official details from its developer; leaving fans fearful they might die before it releases.
Since GTA VI’s official announcement, fans have had to settle for rumours, gossip and leaked gameplay footage which appears from an early build of GTA VI. With respect to all these reports and speculations surrounding its development, I believe in no smoke without fire; so other than those related to gameplay leaks I wouldn’t be surprised if any other reports prove accurate as well.
Rumors surrounding GTA VI suggest it will bring us back to Vice City from 2002’s classic Grand Theft Auto game and features two playable characters inspired by Bonnie and Clyde from this legendary duo’s exploits in South America.
Rumours should always be taken with a grain of salt until proven otherwise, however. Now that GTA VI was announced some time back, surely Rockstar Games needs to provide us with some juicy details such as release date or gameplay trailer?
GTA VI promises to be one of the biggest video game projects ever developed and development hasn’t exactly gone according to plan – which may delay announcements for any type of release date information or reveal.
Recently, it’s been speculated that Grand Theft Auto VI may have been under development for roughly 10 years and may have even undergone at least one reboot attempt during that timeframe. According to one former developer however, these reports of reboot could well have been confirmed.
Jon Young, an ex-Rockstar Games developer and current video editor on GTA VI from 2015-2018 as lead video editor appears to confirm its development two years post-GTA V’s release on PS3 and Xbox 360 and four years prior to it officially being unveiled as GTA VI.
Tez2, the leaker of information for Rockstar Games, suggested in September 2022 that GTA VI’s development began around Red Dead Redemption 2’s launch in 2018. If accurate, this 2018 date coincides with Jon Young working on it until 2018 (according to his LinkedIn profile), although Rockstar never officially confirmed development until 2022 – further supporting Tez2’s claim of rebooted development of GTA VI in 2022 itself.
Hopefully, Rockstar Games will relieve our anxious wait by giving an update on GTA VI’s development soon – especially considering that its parent company Take-Two Interactive recently hinted it may release between 2024-2025.
Grand Theft Auto VI will likely only be made available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms; leaving last-generation consoles behind.
