Underspace initially seems like any generic space shooter until you encounter its giant space monsters to destroy. Reminiscent of Starfield with some elements from Bloodborne mixed in for good measure as well as Lovecraft-esque vibes, I went from “I don’t care” to ‘Pumping it into my veins” within one minute and 31 seconds (coincidentally the length of its trailer!).

Spacefaring RPG will debut on Steam ‘early access’ by 2024 and already promises many engaging features. According to its description, players will “face thunderous monsters, join devious pirates, loot ancient star cities, and make your mark in an ever-evolving galaxy of storms and secrets – sign me up!”

Underspace offers players an intriguing new gameplay experience: Fly, paint, and customize over 60 ships for use as vehicles for kitting out with over 150 pieces of equipment – such as trying not to be eaten by an entertainingly bizarre ghost train!

I wish the trailer started more subtly. Still, it quickly plunges straight into space combat, featuring gunning down other spacecraft while dodging mines and speeding through an elaborate trench reminiscent of Star Wars, all before encountering some space snake that devours your ship!

From here on out, the trailer becomes increasingly ridiculous as stunning scenes from space – including supernovae, gas giant mists, and fiery asteroids – are shown increasingly frequently on an increasingly diminutive craft piloted by its pilot using only its agile movement capabilities. Shadows eventually give way to enormous alien monsters, like when entering Bloodborne mist gates to face city-sized beings in Bloodborne.

Underspace’s 90-second showcase will leave you inspired, even if only half its energy comes through upon release – making for a unique little game experience you should add to your Steam wishlist now! Don’t delay; wishlist Underspace now on Steam.
