People have taken to discussing which games have made them cry. Telltale’s The Walking Dead naturally stands out; millions of fans reached the conclusion and sobbed like newborn babies; I know I did! After this question was posed on Reddit, comments began pouring in from all corners.

Many fans were drawn to The Walking Dead when discussing it; one user stated: “That ending broke me.” With its emotional twists and turns, TWD cemented itself not only as an incredible game but as one which propelled Telltale into narrative gaming’s forefront.

Now I must relive some of the many sad moments mentioned. Like To The Moon, which left a mark upon me. U/whentheworldquiets quoted “I still can’t talk through its tale without getting choked up and weeping.” u/newbabyfly also nominated Journey with enthusiastic agreement from many participants.

Without giving anything away about Red Dead Redemption 2, hundreds of people selected Red Dead Redemption 2 by suggesting some key moments which moved them emotionally – some specifically chose The Last of Us Part 2, while some thought the opening to Part 1 was even more impactful – I have my vote, though! For various reasons the opening hour of The Last of Us broke me and this probably gets my vote too!

Final Fantasy X appears on this list, yet only a select few chose Aerith’s death in Final Fantasy 7; those familiar with Gears of War 2 may well feel something when hearing of Maria mentioned as one of Aerith’s victims.

GAMINGbible staff had some incredible responses when I polled them about what their top 3 picks would be; Richard suggested RDR2 and Metal Gear Solid 4, with Kate selecting Horizon Forbidden West/Tchia; Sam suggested Halo 4, while Angharad went with Reddit-suggested TWD; while Ewan pitched Marvel’s Spider-Man/Celeste.

Gaming in recent generations has reached an ideal point where writers can effectively utilize interactive entertainment to heighten our experiences emotionally.
