Next month could bring news of God of War Ragnarok’s successor.
Sony’s God of War series is one of its flagship IPs and, for many gamers, one of the main draws to their latest PlayStation machine purchase.
Santa Monica Studio’s God of War soft reboot for PlayStation 4 in 2018 quickly won over new and veteran fans alike with its release and welcomed many back into Kratos’ adventures – this time as caretaker of Atreus instead.
God of War (2018) follows Kratos as he attempts to live an idyllic existence with his son in Scandinavia, only for word to get out and Norse Gods coming knocking at his door looking to cause trouble for them. Of course we know not to mess with Kratos; unfortunately for them though they appear not to have received this memo and may soon regret starting a fight against our God of War!
God of War Ragnarok came out in 2022 and, much like its predecessor, received wide critical acclaim among gamers worldwide. Unfortunately though, its ending left some mysteries unanswered, prompting fans to demand another installment as much for that reason as for any others besides simply being an excellent game!
Early this month, new reports regarding an expansion to God of War Ragnarok hinted that an announcement might occur as early as next month. Now though, Santa Monica Studio appears to be hiring new staff for an unrelated IP and could potentially be working on its sequel or spin-off of God of War Ragnarok.
Game Rant reports that an indicator that Santa Monica Studio may be working on another God of War project could be its hiring back of Ariel Lawrence, who previously worked on multiple games within this franchise and recently was promoted to game director.
According to Ariel Lawrence’s LinkedIn profile, she worked on such titles as God of War 2, 3, and Ascension before departing to Riot Games in July 2021 as writer; after later switching roles as game director. Lawrence would return to Santa Monica Studio as writer until being promoted into her current position in April 2022 as game director.
Of course, any unconfirmed rumours should be treated with suspicion until proven otherwise; but I remain firm in my belief that all smoke doesn’t indicate fire; with The Game Awards just weeks away as an important platform for making major announcements, hopefully either Sony or Santa Monica Studio will confirm or deny these reports in due time.
God of War Ragnarok is now available on both PlayStation 5 and 4.
