Story Threads a Death Stranding Sequel Could Explore
Hideo Kojima’s bizarre and ambitious ideasDeath StrandingThey decided to do something completely new in the gaming world. The theme of re-connecting fractured humanity is striking in retrospect, especially when compared to real-world events over the past few decades. The brain-bending implications of these events aside, the Death Stranding narrative needs to be analysed and questioned.
It’s unclear whether a sequel is planned for Death Stranding. The Director’s Cut will be released next month. Norman Reedus suggested recently that Death Stranding would be a sequel. This is unlikely considering the immense scope of the original. With that in mind, some plot threads could be revisited and introduced in a sequel.
Another Event of Extinction
Norman Reedus’ character Sam Porter Bridges says, “Once there had been an explosion.” These are his words in the opening minutes of Death Stranding. He describes a catastrophic event that decimated nearly all humanity and split the rest into smaller pockets scattered around the globe. The story focuses on trying to re-connect society and bring the world back to its former state, or as close as possible.
A destructive event of this magnitude is unlikely to be a one-off. Natural disasters are not uncommon in real life. This massive explosion must have occurred once. However, it may happen again, regardless of the circumstances. Sam and his friends could be re-imagined as Death Stranding, with them trying to prevent another extinction-level event. Maybe the game is based on a time mechanic similar to The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask. This would require players to make wise decisions to prevent the disaster from occurring.

Cliff Unger’s Backstory
Mads Mikkelsen’s character Cliff Unger, despite being an important player in the overall story of Death Stranding and having been a boss battle on more occasions than once, doesn’t get nearly as much screentime. Flashbacks are a common feature of the game, and they all take place from the viewpoint of BB. These flashbacks don’t give a clear picture of who BB is and are presented in a non-linear manner. A more detailed origin story for Cliff would be appreciated if he returns in a sequel.
