Future jobs for FFXIV will likely not be from previous Final Fantasy Games.
Endwalker currently has 20 jobs (if you include Blue Mage). These Jobs will take them into the dark corners to battle demigods, monsters, etc. Each two-year cycle sees new FFXIV expansions. Generally, there are at least two new jobs in each development. Heavensward introduced Dark Knight and Machinist; Shadowbringers gave up Samurai, Red Mage, Shadowbringers added Gunbreaker, Dancer, and Endwalker added Sage and Reaper.
These Jobs are often adapted or references to the Final Fantasy franchise. Dark Knight is taken from Final Fantasy IV. Gunbreaker refers to Squall, Seifer, and Sage, which debuted in Final Fantasy III.
In a conversation with Akihiko Matsui, Final Fantasy XI producer, and Naoki Yoshida, FFXIV creativity director, the two discussed adding new Jobs to their respective games. Yoshida said that FFXIV’s future would likely include more original Jobs not pulled from the rest.
“From a system perspective it is not necessary to increase the number of jobs. Adding new jobs would cause chaos. Yoshida said that we need more jobs to continue providing new gaming experiences.
“Job titles are particularly difficult. He said that a job name is not important if it’s identical to the namesake in its actual design. The gameplay experience must match theirs.” “At this stage, I feel we have no other choice than to create new jobs that haven’t been featured in the FF series.”
However, this is not a new area for FFXIV. Astrologian is a light reference to Astrologer in Final Fantasy Tactics. Reaper appeared in other Final Fantasy titles, but it first made an appearance as a unique Job. However, it would be a great way to expand the franchise by having more Jobs that are based on the mythology of Eorzea.
It will be fascinating to see where FFXIV takes us in terms of Jobs when we travel to new regions such as Meracydia and the New World. But that will not happen until 2023. You can still check out the latest Patch 6.15 and the Make It Rain campaign at Gold Saucer. Or jump into PVP with the Patch 6.11a updates (which may have gone too far). Also, you can check out the fantastic things that the community is doing. We interviewed those who completed Dragonsong’s Reprise first and the group building their own aquarium in-game.
