After Landmark Rights-Destroying Decision [Update], Insomniac Supports Abortion Rights
There were reports last month that Insomniac, a first-party Sony studio, had donated $50,000 to the Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project. However, the report said that Insomniac and Sony/PlayStation would not be allowed to mention Insomniac by name. Furthermore, PlayStation employees were told to refrain from discussing the topic publicly. Bungie, another first-party studio, stated that a Sony muzzle would not silence it after publicly supporting abortion rights. Insomniacs made a public statement in response to Roe v. Wade being overturned by the Supreme Court. This protects the rights of those who seek an abortion in the United States.
This morning, a post from the developer on his social media channels reads: “We’re human beings who create games.” The studio logo signed that reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy were human rights.
Although it’s a concise statement, it asks what it took for Sony and PlayStation Studios to make it public. Insomniac wasn’t the only Sony studio to speak about Roe v. Wade. Bungie updated their original statement this morning with the following text.
Trans Lifeline was also added to the studio’s list of charities to donate to.
At the same time that all these reports were being made about Sony studios being told that they couldn’t publicly advocate for abortion rights in public, the PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan sent an email to employees where he asked them to respect all views on the issue. He also mentioned the one that limits the bodily autonomy of half of the population to end a pregnancy they don’t want. The email received negative responses, particularly after Ryan began to talk about his cat’s birthday.
UpdateNaughty Dog, the PlayStation studio that created The Last of Us, has released its statement supporting abortion rights. This is the third time three Sony studios have spoken out today about this issue, raising questions about how and why the company was told to avoid discussing the matter. Naughty Dog released the following statement:
Something changed at PlayStation that allowed all these studios finally to come forward. This is, I’m certain, a relief for those at these studios who wanted to make public statements but were met with a shrug email from Jim Ryan.
