Subset games announced today via their official Twitter a series major announcements regarding their tactical mech masterpiece Into The Breach. This included a massive free update for all versions as well as a mobile version via Netflix. It is all set to launch July 19. The Advanced Edition (free for all versions: Steam, Switch and the upcoming mobile editions), boasts the following:
The mobile version of the game, which will contain the Advanced Edition content, will be available for free when you subscribe to Netflix. Into The Breach is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.
A trailer was released to tease some of the new pilots and squads. The website also has a link that takes you to a press kit containing additional goodies. The.png shows the “unfairly” difficulty setting as well as the ability to toggle advanced content options such enemy units, mission equipment, and pilot capabilities. All the new features are exciting, but the best part is the new squads. They are all ready and waiting to be activated.
You don’t know anything about me? I am an into the Breach megafan. It’s a tactical puzzler that I consider one of the most well-designed ever. The game has a sci-fi theme and focuses on defense rather than offense. The game combines a crunchy strategy and tactics approach with a clean, easy-to-read UI. You also have perfect information, so you always know what enemy actions are taking place and in which order. It’s a great game, it’s easy to learn, satisfying, and challenging. I’ve been playing it almost every day since its launch in 2018, which is just about every week.
This GDC talk is a great resource. It highlights some of the design process as well as how the team made specific decisions.
Its overall design, balance and story are all high-watermarks in gaming. I tried to present my case for it in a Fanbyte Games of the Decade podcast. I’m hoping more of my colleagues will listen now that the game is available on mobile.
Here are some stats for geeks: I currently have 2300 hours on the Steam version and 505 hours on my Switch. I have achieved every win condition and achievement possible in both the Steam and Switch versions. I’ve also created new challenges and set up random squad combinations to make the game more fun. Since the summer 2018, I have been longing for more content. You can expect more coverage (or maybe even guides!) from me. When the new content launches on Jul 19th.
