Michael Townley was a bank robber in 2004, living with Trevor Philips and Brad Snider in Ludendorff (North Yankton, based in North Dakota). Michael Townley, who wanted to get away from the life he was living, planned a fake bank robbery with corrupt federal agent Dave Norton. (Dave would have to arrest Brad and kill Trevor while Michael faked Michael’s death.) Dave shoots Brad instead of Trevor and Trevor runs away. Michael, a corrupt FIB Agent Dave Norton and a friend, are able to transfer him, his wife, and their children, with a false identity, “Michael De Santa”, from Los Santos, San Andreas, under the witness protection of Dave Norton.
Franklin Clinton and Lamar Davis are asked by Michael to retrieve a vehicle that belongs to Jimmy who has fallen behind on the purchase of it. This is nine years later, in 2013. Michael is worried that his son will be a victim to credit fraud. He hides inside the car and confronts Franklin. He forces his son to smash the vehicle against the window of the dealer’s shop when he is driving to the store. Clinton gets fired but De Santa becomes his friend.
Michael and Franklin then chase Kyle Chavis to the mansion where he destroys it in anger. The property, however, belongs to Natalia Zverovna who is the girlfriend of Mexican drug-lord Martin Madrazo. She was also a former student of his trainer. Madrazo finds De Santa, and demands that he pay him compensation. The two agree to settle their debt with the proceeds of a robbery that took place at the Vangelico Jewelry chain. Trevor Philips learns about the Ludendorff Robbery from watching TV. He realizes at that point that Townley is the only possible author, because he recognizes a phrase Townley said the day before the robbery.
