Fans of Red Dead Redemption agree Arthur Morgan makes for a more compelling protagonist than John Marston.
Which character do you consider the better protagonist: Arthur Morgan or John Marston? Fans are currently deliberating this issue on Reddit thread.
Red Dead Redemption and its sequel offer one of the finest video gaming experiences ever, telling John Marston and Arthur Morgan’s tales respectively in action-adventure titles from Rockstar Studios. One fan decided to use Reddit as an informal poll and judge which of them made for better protagonists in Red Dead Redemption or its sequels.
“Who do you consider the superior protagonist?” was asked of WrongPatient on r/reddeadredemption subreddit by WrongPatient and it resulted in 296 comments at time of writing as fans shared their perspectives on WrongPatient’s question.
Fans of Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston have repeatedly shown their affection, saying things such as, “Give me John! His storyline from beginning to end was amazing; Arthur served as mentor/mentee figure and helped shape John’s persona throughout RD1. RD2 tells John’s tale.” One user even stated they played Red Dead 2 because everyone anticipated eventually playing as John at some point during its narrative.”
Red Dead Redemption 2’s Arthur Morgan stands out in particular. According to one user, Arthur “is an outstandingly written and sympathetic character, with actual redemption from beginning to end and real growth throughout.” That sentiment came as John never received such redemption in RDR1. Another user initially disliked playing as Arthur when it first arrived; yet by game’s end he wanted Arthur back! If that is not a testament to Roger Clark and the writing team then nothing is!
No matter who wins out between John and Arthur in Red Dead Redemption’s eternal debate of favorite, its success speaks for itself.
