Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 receives an stunning Unreal Engine remake
Too often publishers entrust fans to do all the hard work of recreating old games instead of doing it themselves; though this practice can be frustrating at times, fan-made projects produce stunning results, such as Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2.
Some of you may already be dismissing this topic outright, convinced that Knights of the Old Republic remains the central classic Star Wars title – beloved by fans to such an extent that its remake cancellation left fans devastated – however for that game to exist at all, titles like Dark Forces 2 were necessary precursors.
Dark Forces was an enormously popular (even now with “very positive” ratings) game and its sequel continued where its predecessor ended, featuring Kyle Katarn’s search for both his lightsaber and knowledge about himself and his powers. While not quite as widely appreciated as its predecessor, Dark Forces II still enjoyed strong fan support that continues today.
Why would Remake be necessary if the game was still doing well? Simply, its old graphics can be tough on the eyes; not forgetting its nostalgic joy of seeing any retro game remastered using Unreal Engine; finally after three years and tireless effort by YouTuber Ruppertle this remake has finally been finished using this method.
According to their creator, their goal was to recreate one of their “favourite games” without losing its base look, feel and gameplay elements that made it so pleasurable to play – something many other fans also feel they accomplished admirably. We agree wholeheartedly! They accomplished exactly what was promised them by recreating such an authentic experience for fans everywhere to experience once more!
“I loved that they retained the original sound design which still sounds incredible today without becoming outdated!” exclaimed an excited gamer while another said this remaster is an amazing love letter to DF2, with great anticipation being shown by many as time progressed.
