In a surprising revelation, the long-lost source code for the original *Fallout* and *Fallout 2* has reportedly survived thanks to Interplay co-founder Rebecca Heineman.

Speaking to *VideoGamer*, Heineman confirmed she archived all her projects before leaving Interplay in 1995, including backup copies of *Fallout 1* and *2*, stored on CD-ROMs. “I have the source to all my projects… I kept EVERYTHING,” she said, adding that her company MacPlay also handled the Mac ports of the games, giving her full access to the original assets.

This comes after Fallout creator Tim Cain stated in a YouTube video that developers were instructed to destroy their materials upon leaving Interplay, leading many to believe the source code was permanently lost.

Heineman said she would need Bethesda’s permission to release the source code publicly, as the rights to *Fallout* now belong to them. While there’s no indication yet whether Bethesda will allow it, fans and preservationists remain hopeful.

With *Fallout 5* still years away and ongoing speculation around a *Fallout 3* remaster, this discovery could be a major development for fans of the classic CRPG titles.
