PlayStation Plus free game has come under scrutiny as developers confirm poor performance won’t be addressed with patches.

Subscribing to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass offers one of the main advantages: accessing games we may otherwise overlook.

Sony recently unveiled their plans for PlayStation Plus’ Essential tier in December 2023, including LEGO 2K Drive, Powerwash Simulator and Sable; today we focus on this last game.

With Sable from indie studio Shedworks and publisher Raw Fury, players will embark on an amazing and unforgettable adventure as they guide Sable through her Gliding ritual; an experience which spans vast deserts, breathtaking landscapes and even remnants from spaceships or ancient wonders!

Sable first made its debut for PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One back in September 2021 – yet fans had to wait more than 12 months before PlayStation 5 finally received it. So when Sable was added as part of PlayStation Plus library for 2023 it should have been met with excitement; yet its arrival has not been received well with many reports alleging performance issues on PS5.

As soon as a Twitter user asked Gregorios Kythreotis, creative director for Sable, about their performance issues being fixed on PS5, his response sadly provided little hope of resolution: Ricardo Pereira commented that Sable’s performance on PS5 “is currently extremely poor – which undermines an otherwise fantastic game running underneath. Any word on an update patch now that it has made available through PS+ to so many new players such as myself?”

“Unfortunately not, as our small team had attempted to squeeze out more performance with what resources were available – over one year post Xbox launch; but at some point we needed to start creating new stuff,” replied Kythreotis. We approached some larger companies but their needs demanded much larger sums than us.”

As is to be expected, much of the reaction has not been favorable. “So why would I ever invest my money on any game from your studio again in future releases? Your studio just told millions of potential gamers “Sorry but not worth our development time to provide you with a quality playing experience. Sad reflection on state of the game industry”, wrote Despair2077.

“Your post just inspired me to uninstall that app from my PS5, as opposed to suffering through its poor performance,” replied an annoyed SanGerardino. “So… enjoy your PS+ money!”

“Well, it seems safe to assume whatever “new stuff” you make will run like garbage as well, so I can safely ignore it,” added ASaltyDog2358.

At the end of the day, none of us know what challenges await those behind closed doors; although being kind might not always be ideal in Shedworks environments. No matter our feelings on a subject matter or its outcome.

Sable can now be found across PC, PlayStation 5 and modern Xbox consoles.
