PlayStation 5 outsold Xbox Series X/S three to one in 2023
New data reveals that in 2023 the PlayStation 5 outsold Xbox Series X/S by three to one, making Black Friday especially fruitful for Sony.
Before we dive in, please leave any console wars debate at the door. In my house, we love all consoles! Personally I enjoy switching back and forth between my PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch with great pleasure – taking equal pleasure from each. Nevertheless, sales figures provide us with insight into which types of games, features and experiences consumers find appealing; with Sony’s PlayStation 5 having taken center stage this year despite what appears to be an overall quiet year in terms of sales figures.
According to IGN, Sony’s PlayStation 5 sales have now hit 50 million units putting it on course to outsell its predecessor – PlayStation 4. According to data provided by Reuters, November was Sony’s best ever November for sales of this console with Black Friday being particularly fruitful. By 31 March 2024 – where its financial year ends – they hope to sell 25 million PlayStation 5 consoles; something they believe they are already on course for.
Sony hopes that by 2023 it can surpass their total financial year sales of 117 million consoles on record with 22.5 million sales of PlayStation 5 exceeding 7.6 million Xbox sales; thus outselling Series X/S sales three to one. Data analysts Ampere found PS5 sales had grown 65-75% year on year for this financial year alone! It may take time, though. Data analyst Ampere discovered PS5 sales increased 65-75% year-over-year while Xbox sales decreased 15%; therefore outselling them all three-fold!
The Nintendo Switch also experienced sales decline, falling by 18% year over year to 16.4 million units sold this year. Being one of the oldest consoles here, its likely that 2024 may bring something similar if no successor materializes for it soon enough.
